December Creative Play Day 27: Easy and Elegant Cupcakes by Candace Jedrowicz

The Cool2Craft Creative Play theme for December is “Give Yourself a Gift.” You give to everyone else during the holidays and all year long. Time to give yourself a treat! Make something, go somewhere, do something that’s just for you and photograph it! Then share it with us – post it on the Cool2Craft Creative Play blog on the Hive. Anything goes! I’m going to run with this theme and craft every day in December. I’ll be posting tutorials and videos as well as making some kits available at the Marketplace. Join me on Cool2Craft for 31 days of blissful, healing, creative play and give yourself the gift of play, too! [Candace J.]

Cupcakes don’t have to be boring!  And you don’t need any special tools to decorate these mini cakes!  Using a handful of ready-to-use items that you can find in the baking aisle of your grocery store, you can make fabulous edible art!

Except for the little spatula and cupcake, I got everything on sale.  You’ll need a can of icing, some tubes of colored icing and the plastic screw-on decorating tips sold right next to the icing tubes.

Use a spatula or butter knife to cover the cupcakes with the canned icing.  Screw the petal tip (it’s got the tapered slot opening) on to one of the icing tubes.  With the wide end pointed away from you, hold the cupcake in your other hand and squeeze the tube, turn the cupcake and wiggle the icing tube ever so slightly.  You’re making a small ruffly circle in the center of the cupcake.  Now repeat the motion with the narrow end of the tip straight up.

Hey, you just made a flower!

The leaf tip has a curved end with a cross shaped slot.  Hold the tip with the longer slot horizontal.  Squeeze the tube and wiggle it slightly side to side.  As you release the pressure, pull back so that a point forms on the end of the leaf.
Use the round tip to make polka dots.  Hold the tube straight up and down.  Squeeze gently then release the pressure as you lift the tube.
The star tip makes beautiful borders.  Hold the tube perpendicular to the edge of the frosting.  Squeeze the tube while moving the tip in a circle.  You’re making rosettes!  Go all the way around the cupcake and admire your creation!

You are AWESOME!
