The coming year is going to be the year of harmony for Candace the Muse. January’s Cool2Craft Creative Play Theme asks you to consider what you want for yourself in 2012. What do you want to work on, embody, attract or do this coming year?

This is my Harmony Crown. It’s made from a plastic tote, fuzzy yarn, colorful chain pulls, star garland, gems and my own mix of riot beads. I would so love to see what you can come up with using things you have on hand to create a crown or anything else that represents where you want to be in 2012! Your submission can be a photo of ANYTHING that shows what you desire!

[Candace's Blog]The Cool2Craft Creative Play Theme for This month is “What’s Your Word?” What are your plans for next year? What do you want to attract, practice and create in your life? Spoiler alert!!! In January I’ll be asking you to send me a photo of a “crown” that represents your word for the new year. It could be a real crown, a drawing/painting/sculpture or other any other representation of the “crown” you’ll be donning for 2012!

When I’m in my studio, I feel like a mad scientist. To my family, I’m crazy Aunt Candy toiling away long into the night! Sounds of hammering, the roar of my heat tool, inspired shrieks and maniacal laughter waft upstairs. I am in my element.

When I’m upstairs in the “real” world, I’m less at ease – shy and quiet actually. That’s why my word for 2012 is HARMONY! I crave more than balance; I crave harmonious integration! I want to be graceful in social situations. I want to sing myself into BEING!

I hope you’ll join me in this journey and declare your intentions for the coming year! Email me so I can post your declaration!

Maria has been working hard to recycle, reuse and repurpose everything she can. Candace the Muse is very excited about that! EcoHeidi Borchers has been such a good influence on us all, using recyclables to make art. Here is Maria’s latest project.

“A New Face Lift!!! A New Purpose!!!

I am all about trying to do my best when it comes to recycle. At work, I save all my paper and get it shredded, then I take the bags to the recycling bins found outside the school in my block or my kids old elementary school. At home we get recycling picked up every other week. Well I started using recycled items into my crafts. And I am showing you here my last recycled project, which found a new home right on my front door.
So at work I also recycle the backs of my desk calendar, the back cover of my writing tablets, and so on. I was at work one day last week during my lunch break and drew a heart on some cardboard, I have an old book I’m turning into a journal, so I tore up some pages, had a Starbucks paper bag, and started making rolled paper flowers in different sizes, I remembered I had purchased an old dress pattern from a second hand store and made some flowers of that too. I used Westcott’s titanium scissors, (which I keep in my purse all the time, you never know when you will need them) and got started.

	Here is my heart shape image, ready to be cut

	Here is my heart completely covered with the rolled paper flowers I made using book pages, brown paper bag and dress pattern paper all were glued using Ranger’s Glossy Accents.

	So over the weekend I finished this project, I took some glitter mist and sprayed the flowers, then I took my hot glue gun and added some white lace to the back of the heart all around , once all the lace was glued, I took more of the glitter mist and sprayed the lace and the flowers a bit more, took part of the lace to make the hanger and glued it to the back as well. I decided to add some feathers in pink and white in some areas, not all around, just to bring something else into the project.

	Here is the final project, hope you like this. I really had fun taking some old items and giving them a new face lift, a new purpose!” Thank you so much, Maria! We love our EcoHeidi’s jewelry projects! Each one more exciting than the next! Angie LeBlanc was so inspired by EcoHeidi Borchers Reverse Fabric Water Bottle Earrings that she’s already made several sets for her family! Lucky family!

	Here’s what Angie told me:”Here are the eco pieces I made after watching last Monday’s show -” [September 19th Cool2Craft Jewelry Episode] “I wasn’t sure how Heidi attached the circles on the necklace so I used jump rings with a fake pearl on them. I made all the pieces one day, fabric and plastic bottle, and then assembled them today in about an hour. I hope you all like them. I enjoyed making them, hubby and ma-in-law like them. Thank you all for your inspiration. Angie”

Cool2Craft Creative Player and Two Time Handmade Swag Winner Martha Jenkins!

Martha Jenkins is a frequent Cool2Craft Creative Player. In fact, this fabulous submission earns Martha a second package of handmade swag from the studio of Candace the Muse and Candace is as pleased as she can be! It’s always exciting to see what Martha has been up to!

	I was thrilled to open this email from Martha! Here’s what she told me: “You’ve had me scrambling about the computer trying to find appropriate photos. My all time favorite project is also my most ambitious. I spent more than 2 yrs in the thinking process before I ever did anything tangible but I think the results are well worth it. It began when I saw an Old World Father Christmas figure my friend had on display in her living room. (Picture open mouthed awe.) I immediately wanted one—forget that thing about coveting. I WANTED ONE! Did I mention that he’s 6′ tall?

	Aside from not knowing where to find one, there was the price tag—her’s was originally about $3,000 but greatly reduced on clearance. I’ve since found a few in stores (Chicago, Tennessee, Virginia, Alaska) but the cheapest was $2,500. Still too much to justify. After much mental trial & error, with my husband’s help, I finally realized my dream. The Boss helped design & build the wooden frame. My figure is unique in that, unlike the others I’ve seen, he can be dismantled without tools & stored in 2 large plastic containers …except for his walking staff.

	After the SantaI got so caught up in them that I’ve made several using rich looking upholstery fabrics for the robes. His face is purchased papier’ mache & he has a real Santa beard. I also make most of the accessories. Teddy bears, balls, stick horses, flower decorations, etc. figures reached fruition, I hit on the idea of using just the face with his beard & hat as a wall decoration & from there, I’ve also made just the decorated hats that can be worn or displayed during the Holidays.

	He’s definitely my favorite creation but I’m not certain if it’s “because of” or “in spite of” the difficulties I had with him. The Cool2CraftCreative Play Theme for October 2011 is My Favorite Project and you’re in for a treat with SH’s submission! It’s a soda can night light – No kidding! Sh has included a tutorial so you can make your own.

	Here is Sh’s tutorial: “You will need: A night light Soda can or beer can- rinsed out Sharp pin (safety pin, thumb tack, sewing needle etc) Scissors Optional: Paint Colored printer paper Template

	1. Decide what design you want to light up. If you want to put in your own design, make sure the design is relatively simple as a more intricate one will not work very well. I knew I wanted a butterfly, so I went to Google Images and printed out one I liked, but was still a pretty simple design. You can get the butterfly image here. 2. If you are choosing to paint your can I would suggest you do steps 4 and 5 now. If you want to paint your can, now is the time to do it. Paint it however you would like.

	3. If using words or picture on the can, just stick your pin in, on the area that you would like to light up. You will be making a whole bunch of pinpricks. You want them pretty close together, but not so close together that they will form a bigger hole. For your own template-make sure you are happy with the size, tape it down where you want the design to be. Pin prick all the black lines. Again, you want them pretty close together, but not so close together that they will form a bigger hole. Here’s the can after pin pricking.

	4. Careful: Stick a scissor in the back of the can to form an opening. You will need to cut a rectangle. Throw out the piece that you just cut out. Do it right away, so nobody gets hurt, as the area will be sharp and while you’re doing that make sure nobody touches the can as there will be sharp edges on the can still. 5. Careful: Fold masking tape over on the sharp edges of the opening, so that the edges are no longer sharp.

	Please make sure you plug this in on a high wall outlet out of reach of little ones. Someone suggested that you file down the sharp edges and spray paint the can for a more professional look, it’s your choice. 6. Plug in night light and slide can over night light.” How cool is that!? Here’s what Alesia had to say:

“When our ceiling fan broke my grandson had a ball taking the fan blades off. He is special needs so the repetition was good for him. My dd needs money so she took the metal and I started to alter the blades. I took left over paper scraps from my stash and made paper dolls etc. from the Cricut. This is one blade. I think I am going to do all the blades in seasons. Hugs Alesia”

Once upon a time Martha Jenkins created a quilted Easter egg for her grandlet, Jaycee. It was a magical egg, hand crafted and filled with treats. Martha shared her quilted egg photos with Candace the Muse because the Cool2Craft Creative Play Theme for September is “My Quilt”.

	Martha told me: “One long ago year, in lieu of Easter baskets, I made large, treat filled, papier mache’ eggs for my 2 daughters, son in law & both grandlets. I began with blown up balloons that I covered with papier mache’. (torn up newspaper & Mod Podge.) When they were dry I filled & decorated each differently. With Mod Podge & fabrics, granddaughter Jaycee’s became a quilt. I fitted triangles of fabric edge to edge over the entire egg. Some teddy bear fabric offered a nice applique for the top/center. I used a bottle of glitter glue to outline each of the seams & glitz up the applique. A ribbon & bow finished the project. To get to the contents on Easter morning, we cut an opening in the bottom that could be repaired so we could reuse it for decorating.

	I’ve since used my “quiAs you can see, she enjoyed her Easter goodies. She was about 1 1/2 years then & is now 16 (& 5’9″ tall).lted egg” idea for smaller eggs. Both purchased papier mache’ and plastic eggs work well but are better if painted white first. Painting will keep the darker egg from showing thru lighter colored fabrics & will help the fabric adhere to plastic eggs. I spray a final acrylic finish on these & sometimes add a screw eyelet for hanging. They look great hanging or with several others nested in a basket. The Cool2Craft Creative Play Theme for September 2011 is “My Quilt”. Maria Soto’s living quilt is her wonderful wall of inspiration!

Here is what Maria has to say about her “quilt”:

“Well – to me what is most important in my life are my children and extended family and true friends. I was wondering what to make for this challenge – I knew it had to include my children and the rest of my family – but it also had to include my second passsion – crafting, creating, expressing myself through my children and my works. I looked up to my wall in my office – to look at all the pictures of my loved ones and all the pretty flowers I have done and realized that my quilt is a work in progress – always adding more to it! Always there as a reminder of why I am here – and why I am the way I am. So here is a photo of my daily inspiration, a picture of what best describes me!!

Hope you can see all the different flowers I’ve done and placed on my wall – I have used brown paper bags, grocery shopping bags, nylon, yarn, polymer clay, crepe paper, recycled aluminum foil, toilet paper rolls, and water bottles – also from old calendars or magazines – Hope you all like my inspiration wall!!! It reminds me why I must continue to work and keep going every day despite all the problems and issues I encounter daily!!!”

It’s In the Cards

[Candace's Blog] The Cool2Craft Creative Play Theme for September is My Quilt. I made up a set of cards for my goofy video so I could “reveal” the theme as a fortune teller.

This is the card that represents me. I’m looking for submissions from everyone! If you’re a quilter, I want to see what you’re working on! If you’re not a quilter you have a story to tell about what makes up your quilt of life. Madame Yendrovich (that’s the Polish pronunciation for Jedrowicz) wants to know!
