Well, Julie has finished her miniature vintage inspired veterinarian hospital and look how fabulous it is!

Here’s Julie’s update:

Last update on the veterinary hospital.  All patients doing extremely well under the care of their fashionable, compassionate caregivers.  The hospital added additional staff by Hollylovesart on Etsy, as the summer is a very busy time at the veterinary clinic.

Specially Made Quilted Rugs for the Veterinary Vignette

Bettie Pharr’s handmade quilted rugs arrived at Julie Western’s house yesterday and Candace the Muse is over the moon excited!   Just one look at the details and you’ll be planing your own miniature vignette adventures!

Here is the latest news from Julie, complete with links to her fabulous designers and suppliers:

“Two quilt rugs arrived by Bettie Pharr yesterday, Piecefulthings on Etsy.  I send her a photo of the project underway and some measurement guidelines and then she provides the creative genius to design, select fabrics and quilt the rugs.  The photos don’t translate the details in the quilting that she has invested in the pieces, small medallions, floral motifs on some of the central squares, diagonal ovals on one of the rugs, wavy lines on another.  It is a thrill to commission her for the quilts and be so delighted by the beautiful outcomes.

Lindsay Pastore of PleyDey on Etsy, created the shabby chic table in the reception area and the narrow table with the microscope/lab work on it.  She does wonderful distressed painted finishes.  Most of the miniature apothecary and vintage pet food items were ordered through Valerie Claire Miniatures in England.

On their way are two miniature guinea pigs by Ginko305 and a rabbit from RuthCreates.  A custom pink cabinet is being worked on by MinisbyJan  to house the small creatures on the third floor kennel.  A pale pink sofa with linen pillows with Paris prints is arriving from LasMinisdeMaini in Spain for the reception area.  All of these sources were found on etsy, my go-to global marketplace for handcrafted wares.  I have discovered so many talented, creative vendors through my etsy searches.  Working on these miniature worlds has been so rewarding, creating the vignettes and connecting with so many wonderful people who craft meticulous tiny wares.

Julies vintage inspired vignettes are fascinating to me!  Don’t you just love all the tiny details?  Do you see the fish bowl in the first floor reception?  The tiny jar of cotton balls in the second floor lab?  The tiny dog bed in the third floor kennel?  How perfectly divine!  I love it when Julie shares!  Enjoy!

Candace’s friend (and artist extraordinaire) Julie Western is pulling together elements for this charming miniature, vintage look clinic!  Just take a look at the details!  Warning:  This post might make you want to start a whole new way of crafting!

In Julie’s latest letter, she said:

“Just wanted to send you a couple photos of the veterinary hospital in progress.  Bettie Pharr is working on two small quilt rugs for the reception and kennel floors.  She has done such amazing work on the other miniature quilt rugs, I’ve left the design and details completely in her hands.  Also, in the works is a three level, wire front cabinet for rabbits and guinea pigs for the kennel area.  Still waiting on the large apothecary order from England to arrive.”

Now, prepare to feast your eyes!

Candace’s dear friend, Julie Western, has been creating marvelous, miniature, vintage inspired rooms!  Julie scours antique stores and calls on artists from all over to create specialty items for  the vignettes, combining elements to develop these unique and amazing scenes!

Julie says:
” I set up the veterinary hospital animals, customers and staff on my dining room mantel and took a couple of photos to share with you.  Yesterday, I found an eclectic wall shelf at an antique mall in Delaware that was constructed out of an old drawer turned vertically, two staircase balusters adorn the sides and a wood arch with wood beads hammered in place with nails.”

Julies Vet Project 2 e1337778843937 Julie Westerns Veterinary Vignette

“There were several shelves in place that I am in the process of taking out so that I can wallpaper and space the shelves to create three levels.  The structure is just the crazy kind of mix of salvaged pieces that I adore.  It can be hung on a wall or sit on a table for display.  The three levels will allow me to develop a reception/retail area, treatment/lab and apothecary and a grooming/kennel area.”

One of Julie’s favorite artists to call on: Holly Sinnett

Julie loves animals and works at a veterinarian hospital, so it’s no surprise to me that she’s creating this wonderful piece!  I asked Julie if I could contribute something to the new project and she suggested tiny dog and cat treat jars.  I’m on it, Julie!

Thanks so much for sharing, Dear Friend!  You’re the best!

Julie Western’s Dollhouse Quilt Shop Revisited

DSCN2583

DSCN2583 e1332856366657 Julie Westerns Dollhouse Quilt Shop Revisited

Last December Candace the Muse introduced our readers to an amazing woman who happens to be a wonderful artist.  Julie Western dives into each new artistic adventure that comes her, taking a bit of the previous adventure with her.

Julie’s artistic dance with fibers and quilts moved gracefully into an extension of a life long love of paper dolls that translated into miniature rooms!  Here’s an update on Julie Western’s Dollhouse shop makeover.

Julies Dressmaker Shop 12 2011 300x198 Julie Westerns Dollhouse Quilt Shop Revisited Julie told me:“The quilt shop has transformed from its holiday decor to include more quilts and a lacemaker’s work area.  The Ohio Star variation floor quilt and toile wall quilt with the children and dogs were custom made by Bettie Pharr, Piecefulthings on etsy.  Bettie created a 16″ x 20″ framed wall quilt out of the toile fabric and after seeing it in her etsy store, I contacted her to see if she would take on a small commission for similar quilts for the storefront.”
DSCN2594 300x224 Julie Westerns Dollhouse Quilt Shop Revisited “Working in miniature is a very challenging scale to quilt.  Bettie did amazing work translating the original design into two small format quilts with beautiful details.
The burgundy basket quilt was made by Pamela Boatright, Pamelaquilts on etsy, the pieces in the basket handle are only 1/4″ half triangles and The lacemaker’s bolster pillow and stand, chair, mini pillow with handmade lace and the glass globe table are by Ingeborg Krebs, Ingesminis on etsy.  Historically, lacemaker’s would fill a special glass globe with water and use candlelight to illuminate their intricate work. meticulously pieced.”
DSCN2585 300x224 Julie Westerns Dollhouse Quilt Shop Revisited “The fabric dolls, dog and cat are all by Holly Stinnett, Hollylovesart on etsy.  Holly has been creating the Tea with Jane Regency dolls for some time, all in glorious period attire with lovely embellishments.  Her latest art doll Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) from Breakfast at Tiffany’s is fabulous.  She is creating one for me, along with the additional dolls for the cafe.
I am so grateful to all the artists that have crafted their wonderful wares, their work had made the quilt shop and cafe storefront such a delight!”
Julie Western Doll House 300x224 Julie Westerns Dollhouse Quilt Shop Revisited Back to the miniature cafe:“Bettie Pharr just e-mailed me a photo of the quilt she created for the bakery cafe floor.  Bettie is amazing at taking a few descriptive phrases from my “wish list” and designing the perfect additions for the rooms.  I love how she chose the curvy fabric for the sashes and borders, and the actual quilting is done in directional lines within the quilt blocks, in such tiny detail.”
image 300x222 Julie Westerns Dollhouse Quilt Shop Revisited   I tried to quilt in miniature for a day and a half, before I thought I would lose my mind trying.  That’s when I started scouring etsy for small scale quilt artists.  Bettie creates framed quilts and larger quilts, but she usually doesn’t work in this miniature of a scale, but she accepted the first commissions and followed up with this special project for me. She surpasses my every hope with her talents, design instincts and vision.

Thank you Julie, for all the fabulous ideas and contacts!

Julie Western’s Dollhouse Rooms

Julie Western Doll House

Julie Western Doll House e1332774877833 Julie Westerns Dollhouse Rooms

[Candace’s Blog]  You may remember a miniature quilt shop designed by my dear friend, Julie Western, and here is her latest adventure – a vintage cafe!  I love it when my friends send me fabulous photos of things they’re imagining into being!

Here’s what Julie had to say:

“Creating the quilt storefront has lead me down the path of creating another room box.  I found an old chair for $15.00 without a seat and thought wouldn’t the carved legs and wood apron of the chair make a great vintage storefront.  Next, I found an old wood crate for $15.00.  I cut down the size of the crate to fit inside the chair’s perimeter, removed one of the crate’s sides to leave an open ceiling and fastened the pieces together with screws.  Located a vintage wallpaper in the etsy shop Patina Paperie and papered the walls.  Wish you were here to craft mini cakes and pastries with me!  (Me too, Julie!)  The french bread baguettes are my first attempts at polymer clay bread making after watching a tutorial on youtube.  Almost all of the furnishings and accessories have been located in antique malls to create a vintage ambiance to the bakery cafe.  The fabric doll is made by HollylovesArt on etsy.  Holly is creating two more dolls and a dog for the cafe.  I still have plans to add a rustic bread rack, art on the walls, more cakes, cupcakes and pastries and a quilted rug by Bettie Pharr, Pieceful Things on etsy (she made two quilts for the quilt shop for me.)

This is Julie’s first dollhouse project.  It was originally a dressmaker’s shop and Julie refurbished it creating a vintage consignment shop.  Love it!

Julie Western is a magnificently creative friend of Candace the Muse.  Julie is inspired by both artists and media with rich histories and she makes amazing art in the process of discovery.  Candace is tickled pink to learn all about Julie’s foray into wool applique.

Here’s what Julie told me:

“I joined a wool applique bee through my quilt guild.  We had Sue Spargo visit our guild this Fall and she does amazing colorful contemporary folk art quilts.  The wool bee was started by some of the women who took her workshop, to keep gathering together to create in wool applique.  My first project was a roll up needle keeper case started at the wool bee last Sunday (which was a great small project.) ”

Julie Western Wool Applique 2 e1326985539659 Cool2Craft Creative Play Contributor Julie Western Wool Applique

“Many times cotton applique pieces, buttons, and embellishing stitches and beads are used to enhance the work.  It was  wonderful to gather with a group of women at the wool bee, it reminds me how much I miss all our collective creative endeavors”

I miss them, too, Julie!

“There is a quilt pattern “Magnolia” that I would love to do, but I have a few smaller projects in mind first.  I love her color palette, lots of turquoise, aqua, olive green, lime green, magenta and rich earth tones.”

Sue Spargo magnolia e1326985976445 Cool2Craft Creative Play Contributor Julie Western Wool Applique

“Working with the felted wools to applique is wonderful because the shapes are cut out and the edges are left as is and whip stitched in place.  The cottons and velvets do require a needle turned applique technique to finish the edges.   Sue does gorgeous embroidery stitches on her work, reminding me I need to revive my hand stitching techniques.  Hunting thrift stores for bargain priced old wool coats and skirts that are 100% wool and a medium weight is next on my list for gathering supplies.  Many of the wools for sale on Sue’s website are dyed by her sister and are “overdyed” on top of the original manufactured color.   I just love the colors they have created, especially with the patterned herringbone and houndstooth check wools.  I purchased a spectrum of wool in bundles on etsy from a storefront Quilting Acres that should arrive any day that should get me started on building my wool stash.”

Thank you for sharing your inspiration, Julie!

Candace’s dear friend, Julie Western has impeccable taste!  Julie is a fabulous mixed media artist with with a love for paper and fabric dolls.  Check out Julie’s miniature renovated store.  Warning: You’ll fall in love with the charming details!

Here’s Julie’s Story:  My latest project is a storefront from a consignment shop, purchased this week for $30.00.  It looks like it was originally a dressmaker’s shop, it had a couple of sewing machines, a christmas tree in it, small scissors, a few boxes on the shelves.  I am having a wonderful time turning it into a quilt and needlework shop.  I haven’t had a chance to “finish” off the old quilt square that is the rug, busy making tiny bolts of fabric from my stash and hunting down a couple of chairs and holiday decorations.

Thanks so much for sharing, Julie!  I’ll post updates as I get them.  I’d love to see and share what you’re working on, dear readers! AND I’ll send you something handmade from my studio for each four projects you share!
